KL Sides Rule The Roost

GEORGETOWN: TEAMS from Kuala Lumpur dominated the Men's and Women's Open category finals in the 22nd USM-Penang International Netball Carnival at the Universiti Sains Malaysia Mini Stadium in Minden near here recently.

In the Women's final, defending champions Bukit Jalil Sports School's Arowanas BJSS out-played the more popular PKS Revo, Kuala Lumpur 12-7. The sports school team were more aggressive and would have easily scored more points if not for taking their foot off the pedal.

For their dedication and sportsmanship, Arowana BJSS received two awards, top scorer Nurul Adha Abu Bakar captured the Best Player Award while the team walked tall with the Fair Play Award.

In the Men's Open, defending champions Cobra Alpha Kuala Lumpur were knocked out 10-9 by Royale Kuala Lumpur while Cobra Bravo Kuala Lumpur were whipped 11-4 by Legend B.

In the final, Legend B thrashed Royale 15-4. The former also lifted two awards -- Fryz McArthur Lennon was awarded the Best Player trophy and the team collected the Fair Play trophy.

Meanwhile, USM Sports and Recreation Centre director Muhammad Mohd Hanif said the USM-Penang International Netball competition organising committee was accorded -- for the fourth time -- recognition and accreditation by the Malaysia Book of Records for hosting the 'Largest Netball Competition' in the country.

Organising chairman Natasha Alina Ismail said 145 foreign and local teams contested for honours in nine categories. She said 13 teams from Sri Lanka, Singapore (four) and Australia (one) provided their support for an international flavour.

GEORGE TOWN: BUKIT Jalil Sports School (BJSS) Sharks from Selangor were the only team in the junior categories to successfully defend their Girls' Under-18 title, defeating Tengku Mahkota Ismail Sports School (SSTMI) "A" from Johor 13-10 at the 22nd USM-Penang International Netball Carnival at the Universiti Sains Malaysia Mini Stadium recently.

BJSS were in superb form in the two-day tournament, trouncing their opponents from the start till the end. In the semi-finals, they thrashed early favourites Mutiara Girls "A", from Penang's Mutiara Impian Sports School, 8-2.

The BJSS girls collected a challenge trophy, a replica trophy, medals and RM600 cash, while SSTMI A settled for silver medals and RM450 cash. Both teams also received Milo goodies.

But the match of the day was the Girls' Under-12 final between Sri Lanka's Sri Siddharta Central College and SK Sultan Sulaiman 1, where the former won 13-10.

The Sri Lankans twice came from behind to win the title and a replica trophy, gold medals and RM400 cash while SK Sultan Sulaiman 1 girls won silver medals and RM300 cash. The Sri Lankans also collected the Fair Play Trophy and the Best Player award through H.M.N. Lanlanthi Dilvukshi.

USM-Penang International Netball Carnival organising chairman Natasha Alina Ismail said 151 teams participated in nine categories, of which 51 teams were in the junior, Under-12, Under-15 and Under-18 categories, while the rest were in the senior categories, comprising of Universiti Sains Malaysia and institutions of higher education.

Netball Players Hold Their Own Against The Australians

Jubilant: The BJSS netball players after winning the BJSS Under-16 International netball tournament.
IT WAS valuable exposure for Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) during the BJSS Under-16 International Netball Tournament in Kuala Lumpur recently.

In the five-team competition, BJSS, under the guidance of Choo Kon Lee and Puah Pei Sam, emerged as the champions after defeating Australia’s Elizabeth College 26-19 in the final.

BJSS and Elizabeth College qualified for the final after finishing as the top two teams in the league. The other teams were Marybryynong Sports Academy from Australia and two teams from Kuala Lumpur Sports School.

Kon Lee said the competition was quite interesting and a platform for the coaches to evaluate the players.

“We are happy with the players’ performance. They adapted well against their stronger and bigger counterparts from Australia. Both the teams from Australia are strong teams.

“We also gave several players, who are 13 and 14, the chance to gain exposure. They also adapted well to the competitive atmosphere and gave a good account,’’ said Kon Lee.

In the way: Nur Syafiqah Khanum Mohamad Fuad (right) going for the ball while a player from Elizabeth College tries to stop her.

It was BJSS’ second victory this month. Early this month, BJSS made their presence felt in the Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) netball carnival. BJSS were champions in the women’s Open category as well as in the Under-18 category. BJSS’ Nurul Adha Abu Bakar was voted as the Best Player in the women’s Open section while Khairul Najuwa Shara-huddin won the Best Player in the Under-18 category.

BJSS also took part in the Inter-national Schoolgirls Netball Challenge in Adelaide, Australia and finished third.

The competitions were also part of BJSS preparations for the Inter-national Youth Sports Challenge in Singapore from Nov 30- Dec 9. The challenge is for the Under-15 age group. The seniors will be involved in the Six Nation netball championship in Singapore later this year.

Except for the Form Five students, who are preparing for the SPM, the other players have resumed training six days a week.

Kon Lee said the Form Five students would rejoin the training programme after the SPM.

“We want the players to achieve good results in the SPM as well. It is important for them to excel in both sports and studies,’’ said Kon Lee.

In January, BJSS will be representing Malaysia in the Tri-Nation Netball championship in Hong Kong. The other two teams will be India and Hong Kong.

Kon Lee said the players would be training during the school holidays.

“We will have to continue training as we want to put up a strong challenge in Hong Kong. Both India and Hong Kong are formidable sides. We have to be well prepared to face them,’’ said Kon Lee.
