LANKY An Najwa Azizan played an inspiring role in Kuala Lumpur’s impressive outing in the netball competition of the State Sports Schools Carnival at the Klang Municipal Council (MPK) Hall in Taman Sri Andalas, Klang recently.

An Najwa, standing at 1.78m, outshone her rivals and helped Kuala Lumpur to a convincing 49-29 victory over Negri Sembilan in the final. It was the first time, Kuala Lumpur, represented by Titiwangsa Sports School, had become champions in netball in the carnival.

Kuala Lumpur coach Azeera Farhana said they were delighted to be the champions.

“We were rewarded for our diligent training programme throughout the year. This is an Under-16 age group competition. But all our players are either 13 or 14 only. We are certainly proud of the players’ committed performance in the competition,’’ said Azeera.

PUAH Pei San has the unique distinction of returning to where she started — playing netball as a teacher and coach.

Since early this year, Pei San, who studied at the Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) from 1999 to 2003, has joined the school as a teacher and appointed its netball coach.

However, it was a peculiar situation when she reported at BJSS. Most of the netball players were her teammates and close friends.

“I have to admit that it was difficult but after some time, the players accepted me as one of the coaches. Being former teammates was also good and the players understand me better.

“They have been very cooperative during training and I am enjoying my stint as a coach, It is exciting and challenging. Being a former student of BJSS, I am comfortable with the system and I am enjoying it,’’ said Pei San.

Our Netball Team Get A Beating

SINGAPORE: Malaysia’s campaign in the World Netball Championship came to a shattering end when they were pulverised 94-22 by England in their final Group D match at the Indoor Stadium here yesterday.

The Malaysians had earlier lost to Barbados 40-62 and Malawi 35-66.

“For Malaysia, the reality is that the opposing teams were just too good and too strong for us. We are still miles away from them. And the painful truth is that if we continue to play like this, we will never be able to get close to the world class teams,” said coach Choo Kon Lee.

Tough For Our Netball Team In Singapore

SINGAPORE: Malaysia will have a mountain to climb at the World Netball Championship, which begins at the Indoor Stadium here today.

The draw for the 16-team championship has put Malaysia in Group D with England, Malawi and Barbados.

England and the south east African nation of Malawi were the top five countries in the previous championship held in New Zealand four years ago. Barbados made it to Singapore as a qualifier from the Americas and Caribbean region.

The top two teams from each of the four groups will advance to the quarter-finals and Malaysia are certainly nowhere near the elites of world netball.

WORLD NETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP 2011, SINGAPORE

The national netball team are preparing for the World Netball championship in Singapore from July 3-10. Malaysia earned a ticket to the world championship after finishing third in the Asian championship in Kuala Lumpur in 2009. Only the top two teams — Sri Lanka and Singapore — had qualified on merit for the world championship. Since Singapore, as host, earned an automatic spot in the championship, Malaysia were given the ticket to be part of the 16-team tournament.

BUKIT Jalil Sports School (BJSS) are geared up for an impressive outing in the Trans Tasmen Secondary Schools Netball competition in Wellington, New Zealand beginning on Monday.

We are well prepared as the players have been training since early this year - CHOKOO NL EE

The BJSS netball coach Choo Kon Lee said they have a strong team, with eight internationals.

“We are well prepared as the players have been training since early this year. The eight players in the team are also preparing for the World Championships in Singapore in July.

“With the experienced players on our side, we are looking towards the competition with optimism,’’ said Kok Lee.

The eight internationals are Nur Sharmila Md Shamsudin, Nurul Husna Akbal Amad, Nurul Adha Abu Bakar, Izyan Syazana Mohd Wazir, Siti Nor Farhana Mustafa, Nur Syafazliyana Mohd Ali, Noramirah Dayana Noor Azhar and Norashikin Kamal Zaman.

The tournament in Wellington is an invitational competition. The organisers were in Adelaide, Australia last year when BJSS were involved in a six-team competition there.

Kon Lee said they finished fifth in Adelaide.

Limbering up: The players going through a warm-up session.

“But the organisers of the Trans Tasmen Secondary Schools championship were impressed with our players. They extended an invitation and we accepted,’’ she added.

The eight internationals, along with Nor Farahana Nawi, were also in the team that played in Adelaide last year.

The other three players in the current BJSS team are Khairul Najuwa Sharahuddin, Nur Ianani Rosli and Nur Bahiyah Mohd Farit.

Kon Lee said the competition in Wellington would be tough as they would be up against top schools from Australia and New Zealand.

“Two teams are from Australia and three from New Zealand. The teams will provide a strong challenge to our players. We are aiming to finish in the top three bracket.

Pass me the ball: The players hard at work during training.

“It is not going to be easy but we are ambitious,’’ said Kon Lee.

BJSS also took part in the Pre-National Super League in Singapore in March. In the seven-team league, BJSS emerged champions after beating the other six teams.

After the tournament in Wellington, the players will return to their home states for the Malaysia Games in Kuala Lumpur from June 2-12.

They have another assignment in Melbourne, Australia after the Malaysia Games. Most of the players are also in the Malaysian team for the World Netball Championship in Singapore from July 3-10.

“There is non-stop competition for the players. But I believe the exposure gained will certainly be valuable for the players,’’ said Kon Lee.
